What Are Rebel Forces?

When dealing with armed rebellion the policy of forcing an unconditional and permanent cessation of violence by that armed enemy is what any government must first pursue. This may be achieved by the physical attrition of that armed force while, where possible, limiting any negative effect on its own population or, as expressed by the rule of law, on those it governs.

Rebel forces are those who oppose the hegemony of an authoritarian regime or, in the case of Star Wars, the Galactic Empire of the New Republic. Some of these are large conglomerates such as the Alliance to Restore the Republic or the Ghorman Front; others are smaller groups such as the Phoenix Cell or the Ghorman Resistance.

Some of the most famous of the rebels include Gial Ackbar, Hera Syndulla and Carlist Rieekan – all Generals for the Alliance; Jan Dodonna, the administrator of Cloud City; and Lonni Jung, who was killed at the Mako-Ta Space Docks in Episode IV: A New Hope by Darth Vader. More recently, rebel forces have made significant advances in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib, advancing toward the cities of Aleppo and Hama. This is due in part to the emergence of a unified rebel body, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which has been supported by Turkey and commanded by the notoriously brutal General Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, who formerly led Al-Qaeda’s official affiliate in Syria, Jabhat al-Nusra.

Other important rebel forces are the Alliance Special Forces, or SpecForce, a military branch of the Alliance to Restore the Republic led by General Crix Madine. Despite being a bit cocky and arrogant, SpecForce took their mission seriously, executing precision strikes against the Imperial war machine with such effectiveness that the Tarkin Doctrine of suppressing political discourse, dismantling grassroots democratic movements, and criminalizing dissent only served to increase resistance.
